Properties of Galactic Outflows: Measurements of the Feedback from Star Formation
نویسنده
چکیده
Properties of starburst-driven outflows in dwarf galaxies are compared to those in more massive galaxies. Over a factor of ∼ 10 in galactic rotation speed, supershells are shown to lift warm ionized gas out of the disk at rates up to several times the star formation rate. The amount of mass escaping the galactic potential, in contrast to the disk, does depend on the galactic mass. The temperature of the hottest extended X-ray emission shows little variation around ∼ 10 K, and this gas has enough energy to escape from the galaxies with rotation speed less than approximately 130 −40 km s −1 . Cosmological SPH simulations: A hybrid multi-phase model for star formation
We present a model for star formation and supernova feedback that describes the multi-phase structure of star forming gas on scales that are typically not resolved in cosmological simulations. Our approach includes radiative heating and cooling, the growth of cold clouds embedded in an ambient hot medium, star formation in these clouds, feedback from supernovae in the form of thermal heating an...
متن کاملGlobal Star Formation Revisited
A general treatment of disk star formation is developed from a dissipative multi-phase model, with the dominant dissipation due to cloud collisions. The Schmidt-Kennicutt law emerges naturally for star-forming disks and starbursts. We predict that there should be an inverse correlation between Tully-Fisher law and Schmidt-Kennicutt law residuals. The model is extended to include a multi-phase t...
متن کاملGusty, gaseous flows of FIRE: galactic winds in cosmological simulations with explicit stellar feedback
We present an analysis of the galaxy-scale gaseous outflows from the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) simulations. This suite of hydrodynamic cosmological zoom simulations resolves formation of star-forming giant molecular clouds to z = 0, and features an explicit stellar feedback model on small scales. Our simulations reveal that high-redshift galaxies undergo bursts of star formation...
متن کاملNeutral hydrogen in galaxy halos at the peak of the cosmic star formation history
Gas inflows and outflows regulate star formation in galaxies. Probing these processes is one of the central motivations for spectroscopic measurements of the circum-galactic medium. We use high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations from the FIRE project to make predictions for the covering fractions of neutral hydrogen around galaxies at z = 2−4. These simulations resolve the interstellar...
متن کاملStar Formation Quenching in Quasar Host Galaxies
Galaxy evolution is likely to be shaped by negative feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN). In the whole range of redshifts and luminosities studied so far, galaxies hosting an AGN frequently show fast and extended outflows consisting in both ionized and molecular gas. Such outflows could potentially quench the start formation within the host galaxy, but a clear evidence of negative feedbac...
